  • Spring Trimester Exploratories will begin on Monday, February 25th.
  • Exploratories will meet 8 times.
  • Exploratories take place Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each week.
  • Exploratories are divided into three age groups: Kindergarten, First – Third Grades, Fourth – Fifth Grades.
  • Registration must be completed and submitted online.

Mrs. Diamond is back! Let’s roll up our sleeves & dig in to the mysterious “coolness” of our planet!! We will fly high and dive deep to discover our feathered & fluffy animal friends that will inspire artwork that is truly out of this world. Calling all Popstars! It’s time to move and groove to the best new tunes. Each week we crank up the music, teach cutting-edge choreography, dress up in Rockstar Costumes and film clips for a fun music video. The video will be edited and emailed at the end of the course to be viewed over and over.  Lights, camera, Rock Out!

Playground Plus is the ultimate playground experience for Kindergarten students. As a Kindergartner, you will get to play fun and creative games! Find out how to play Doctor Dodgeball, Sharks & Minnows, Mr. Fox, and more! Each week, our games will focus on a different skill like strategy, creativity, teamwork, and sportsmanship, just to name a few. So come join us after school to play some games, make new friends, and have lots of fun!

Our lacrosse enrichment program combines athletics, academics, and life lessons to create a dynamic experience that emphasizes safety, fitness, and fun. Certified coaches lead students through station-based drills and games that develop the fundamental skills of passing, catching, defending, and goalkeeping while using the sport to teach valuable life lessons including perseverance, leadership, and sportsmanship. Students also participate in STEAM activities that allow them to explore academic concepts like gravity, geometry, and force through the sport. TGA’s mission is to empower students with the tools to be successful within a team and in life.

Enjoy delicious and healthy foods as we take a culinary journey that the students won’t forget! For the first 4 weeks, your kids will learn to make Greek Chicken Gyros, Hummus & Greek Salad, a smooth Chocolate Mousse, and more! For the last 4 weeks, your students will create EASY, simple, healthy, AND delicious foods featuring tasty meals using ONLY 5 ingredients. Enjoy Mac & Cheese with Zucchini and a healthy Veggie Fried Rice dish! Each lesson, students will develop their culinary skills while learning about nutrition, culture, and even dining etiquette. Get hungry to learn the art of cooking!

Mixed media art refers to a visual art form that combines a variety of media in a single artwork. We will introduce our students to famous and inspired artists like Picasso, Kandinsky, and Mondrian to name a few. Students will create and design projects using cardboard and acrylic paint, twisteez wires, felt, wood, clay, and glass mosaic. Go back in time with us as we work on Picasso cardboard portraits, Hokusai texture waves, Twisteez wire Kandinsky wall art, and more. We believe that creative art is for everyone, so come join us in Mixed Media Art!

Each week, students will learn about real-life space exploration through STEM based lessons and pair up to build a new LEGO®model related to the NASA space program. We’ll be building NASA astronaut training equipment, a space robot, space rovers and more in this exciting session. Are you a budding astronaut? An adventurer who loves space exploration? Also known as “Homework Club”, Readers’/Writers’ Workspace provides a structured and quiet area for students to go to after their exploratory and tackle their schoolwork before heading home. With a small staff to student ratio, we’re there to help keep students on task and focused so they can use their time wisely! If students need assistance in any particular area of study, be it writing, math, spelling, social studies, or general organizational skills, we can assist and coach! Parents are encouraged to communicate any specific areas of focus to our site coordinator so that we can help each student be most successful. Computers will be available for students who have online homework to complete. *Students should come prepared with a book to read each week.

On Wednesdays, add Readers’/Writers’ Workspace after Mixed Media Glass Art or LEGOs!

DEPARTING SPRING 2019! ALL ABOARD…WOO-WOOOO! Chugga, Chugga, Choo-Choo! In 1814 the very first steam engine was built for the locomotive! They used it to move people and cargo over land. Steam billowing, family and friends all waving, saying hello and goodbye is what you see today on the crowded platforms of a train station. Learn how to safely cut, sand, glue and many more skills to build your own wooden locomotive! Join in the excitement of the steam train adventure and register today!

Improv Spinoff is a fun, exciting, on your feet, and energetic class for kids to learn a new and important life skill, improvisation! Improvisation (“improv” for short) is a form of live theatre in which plot, characters, and dialogue are made up in the moment. In this class, we’ll explore improv through fun workshops, games, character development, and mini shows. By practicing improv, kids can build their skills in public speaking, quick thinking, creativity, adaptability, and collaboration! Let’s have a great time after school with Improv Spinoff!

Academic Chess is devoted to promoting the merits of chess among children by using stories, dances, and catchy songs to make the game of chess exciting and easy to understand. Children participating in our program develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, have better concentration and mental discipline, gain confidence, and have lots of FUN!!! All students in this chess class receive an exclusive Academic Chess workbook and participate in the “Big Tournament” on the last day where all kids take home a prize!

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens on Wednesdays after school gets out before the exploratories begin?
Great question! After school gets out on Wednesdays and before our exploratories begin, there is a 25 minute window of time where Growing Outdoors provides lunch supervision on the quad. At 1:10 our staff gathers all of the students enrolled in our programs and gets the afternoon fun started!
What happens if my child participates in Club Oak Park?
At the end of each exploratory, Growing Outdoors staff will walk those children enrolled in Club Oak Park from their exploratory to the appropriate location and transfer their care to the Club Oak Park sraff.
What do I do if my child has to miss an exploratory day?
Please call us as early as possible (before 11 is preferable!) at (818) 889-8383. The Growing Outdoors adminstrative staff will be creating daily attendance sheets for each exploratory, so it would be helpful to have that information as early as possible. If a child that is expected does not show up for their exploratory, we will first check with the school to confirm that they were in attendance that day, and then we will call the parents to confirm their child’s safety.
Why are the exploratories divided into trimesters?
We feel that students will get the most out of each exploratory when they have consistent time to be with the same students and the same instructors to build a rapport. By making each trimester eight to ten weeks in length, students will have three opportunities during the school year to try different exploratories. Each trimester will offer different class options for the various age groups!
Why does registration close before the first day of each exploratory?
Growing Outdoors wants to provide the best possible after school enrichment program. Therefore, we need time to train and prepare our staff, in addition to reviewing each child’s health form, prior to the first day of each exploratory.
Why are the exploratories priced differently?
The price of all of our exploratories is based on number of class meetings, supply costs, staffing needs, and specialized instructor costs. By basing it on these factors, you can rest assured that you are getting what you pay for!
